Global Market: A New Trade Shake-Up
It is undoubted that the United States of America has the largest consumer base. On February 1, 2025, the US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of significant tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. Goods from Mexico and Canada now face a hefty 25% tariff, while imports from China have a comparatively lower tariff levied against them of 10% of the purchase value.
This news has sent waves globally especially to exporters from countries that wish to continue and grow their trade with the US.

British Exports: A Shifting Landscape
For now, British exports remain unaffected by these new tariffs. President Trump has signalled a willingness to resolve trade issues with the UK and maintains a positive relationship with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, which may contribute to the UK's current exemption.
However, the situation remains fluid. The UK government is already preparing contingency plans should the US decide to impose tariffs on British exports. As per the Financial Times, officials have stated:
"We are prepared... ministers will always do what is best in the national interest.”

Industry Concerns: A Chain Reaction?
According to UKFT’s Adam Mansell:
"The fear is that the impact won't stop at the direct costs of tariffs. Trade wars have a tendency to escalate. A tit-for-tat retaliation scenario - whereby the UK and US respond to each other's import taxes with further levies - would magnify the harm. Industries not directly involved in the initial dispute could be caught in the crossfire. The UK’s cashmere industry is a good example. In a previous US-EU dispute over subsidies to aerospace manufacturers, cashmere products were hit with tariffs as collateral damage. For niche and high-value industries like this, such measures can be devastating.”

While UK-made products are currently exempt, those involving manufacturing in China are not. Given that our silk originates from China, Mayfairsilk’s US customers will be subjected to a 10% tariff.
