Love Silk Bedding? Check Out the Ultimate Guide from the Multi-Award-Winning Brand

White Silk Duvet Set Award-Winning Most Outstanding Bedding Store 2022

Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, nothing is more relaxing than a good night's rest. It is crucial for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

There are innumerable factors that could impact the quality of sleep, and one such thing is your choice of bedding. You've likely slept on a few different bedding materials such as Egyptian cotton, linen, polyester blends, or even cashmere, but nothing can match the comfort of sleeping in pure silk bedding. It's natural properties lend it to being the perfect fabric for this purpose.

Mayfairsilk has recently bagged another award, the SME News’ Business Elite Awards of 2022 for the 'Most outstanding Bedding Store 2022'.

In light of this, our experts have shared some tips that will help you buy the best silk bedding and take good care of it.  Whether you're buying silk bedding for the first time or it's become a regular feature in your shopping, this write-up is for all silk lovers. Read further to know more!

Choosing the Momme

"Momme", what's that you might ask? The short answer is it's a weight measurement for silk, the equivalent of 'thread count' when buying cotton sheets.  The higher the momme, the more silk has been used and hence the higher the price.  We have found a perfect compromise of comfort, durability, machine-washable and affordability by using 22 Momme in our silk sheets and 25 Momme with our pillowcases.

Being the 'Queen of Textiles' for over 4000 years, silk is revered and has had its fair share of imitators.  All our silk starts with selecting only the highest grade 6A long-fibre Mulberry Silk.  Many of the imitators out there compromise and use lower quality silk, sometimes blends, or no silk at all.

As in life, you get what you pay for and buying silk bedding is no exception. This is why it's recommended to buy from a reputable brand.

Choosing the Colour

The most interesting and fun part of buying the best silk bedding is to choosing the colour palette that compliments the décor of your room. Your choice of colour can enhance the mood and help falling asleep easily.  Our colour palettes are selected to be soothing and calming.

Experts say that the colour blue has a calming effect and adding a blue silk duvet cover to your sleep routine would have a positive impact on your sleep quality. For a pure and classic look, you can try the ivory shade to enhance the quality of the rejuvenating night sleeps. Try avoiding hues like purple and brown.

Caring for your Silk Bedding

If you’re already sleeping under silk sheets, you might wonder - how to clean my silk bedding? Can I dry clean it? How does it need to be washed?

One of the most enticing qualities of silk is its dust-mite repelling properties. In addition to this, silk also keeps oil and grime at bay. This is why the silk duvet cover is required to be washed less often than other fabrics. All our silk duvet covers and sheets can be machine washed and air-dried.

However, our experts want you to check specific instructions that come along with the silk product. Always use a detergent designed for silk/wool.  Standard detergents will damage the silk. Never expose your silk bedding to any bleaching agents as it could damage the fibres and reduce longevity. Avoid machine drying your duvet as well. You can iron at cool-setting mode from the inside of the duvet to remove any stiffness in the fibres.

Choice of Duvet

There are a variety of duvet filling materials to choose from but when pairing with silk we highly recommend staying with natural fibres only. These are silk, wool, down and feather.  With our recommendations being wool, down and feather in that order.  The appearance of feather doesn't look as good due to the uneven surface showing through on the silk. Synthetic fibres reflect a lot of heat and don't breathe as freely as their natural fibre counterparts, so to best match silk's natural thermoregulating properties stick with one of the fibres mentioned above.

According to our silk experts, the very first thing you must do is check the tog to determine how cool or warm the duvet is. ‘Tog’ is the rating used for measuring the insulating property of the fabric. The recommended range for summers is 2-5 tog for duvets made from natural fibres. Winters require some additional insulation as the mercury drops so you should be looking in the 8-13 tog range. With that said, many in our office have found that when silk is paired with a wool duvet, they've slept all-year round with a 'summer 4-7tog' duvet.

The other reason we recommend a wool duvet, is they're not as heavy as down, so the duvet stays in place all night.

The silk duvet cover will interact with the duvet to regulate temperature and keep you warm in the cold and cool in the heat.
